Optimize structure
Structure is very important for SEO, you know why? Humans love structure, because structure guides them. Your visitors want to know exactly where they can find what they are looking for.
Please take your time and think about the content you like to show and where you like to place this content on your website.
The theoretical foundations showed you how content can structure your site. If you like to have a bit more background-knowledge, you are welcome to read our SEO foundations chapters here. This page will briefly put optimizing the structure of your site into a nutshell.
The golden rule: One Page one topic!
In order to make it possible to the visitor to find easily what he or she is looking for from just one glance of your website, it is crucial that each page covers only one topic! This specific topic should be described as clear and transparent as possible.
Example:
Let's say you are a hairdresser owning a hairsalon and you offer a variety of services, such as a barbershop, a cosmetic line and hair extensions. Instead of placing all three services on one page named "services", be generous and dedicate one page for each service and tell a little more about it. People love stories.
Tip:
Creating different topics for each pages automatically provides you with a keyword for each page. For each page ideally, only one keyword (and its synonyms) should be used. This way your keyword appears naturally in the text of the page, and your visitors immediately know what to find.
Fast and direct to the point: navigation
Since you decided to have one topic only, you probably will end up with a website that has many pages and sub-pages. This requires a fluid navigation on your site. How can you achieve his?
Best by linking your pages. You can for example point out to one of your sub-pages in a text or image, by linking the text or image, whenever it is sensible.
Example:
On the website of the hairdresser one may link to the page of your cosmetic line in the introduction text, so that visitors are aware of this extra product and can click on it should they seek for some info. Or one can link the barber-shop page with further pages that introduce the barbers, treatments and so on.
Tip:
One can also place links in images and buttons, so that visitors are guided easily from one page to another, similar to this website. Each of the website pages should be more or less reachable within 3 clicks. So, link your pages.
A description how to add links to your pages can be found here.
Hide pages to keep the navigation menu neat.
In addition you can hide pages from the navigation menu, so that these pages are only accessible via links from other pages.
This is useful, if you have a lot of pages that build on top of each other. Instead of having one big page with a lot of content, you can create several pages with short content that are connected through "continue" or "next" buttons; similar to this website here and hide all these pages in the menu. More information about hiding pages can be found here.
